Tech startup Product Hunt, which sees users submitting and discovering new tech products via a voting and comment system similar to sites like Reddit, is now branching into game curation with a dedicated games hub overseen by former Polygon editor and co-founder Russ Frushtick.
Product Hunt has long been a darling of the tech early adopter community, and the fact that its first target for expanding beyond tech is games evinces both the consumer interest in game recommendations and the discoverability crisis driving that demand.
“There’s no question that this same level of curation is massively useful for the gaming community, what with dozens (if not hundreds) of mobile, Steam, console and handheld games coming out every single day,” Frushtick wrote in a Medium post outlining his involvement with the new Product Hunt Games hub. “And while there are plenty of excellent sites that provide in-depth coverage of these games, as in Tech, Product Hunt will offer a focused list of killer games every day, curated by a community of game lovers.”
In the same post he also professed an interest in surfacing the work of indie developers and ruminated on the potential for game makers to use Product Hunt’s games community as a place to drum up interest and community engagement in their work through giveaways, community Q&A sessions, and potentially Product Hunt editorial content like videos and podcasts.
