Swedish game industry trade organisation Dataspelsbranschen is looking to introduce gender equality in video games, by positively labelling new releases that promote equality. The company has been given a 272,000 kronor ($36,672) grant by a Swedish government-funded agency to explore possible ways to better promote those games that are doing their part to promote equality in the industry. Dataspelsbranschen manager Anton Albiin told The Local that this new movement will either take the form of all games released in Sweden being given a label based on whether they promote equality, or providing those companies who do promote equality with a form of certification that they can use in marketing assets. “I do not know of any other project in the world asking this question,” he added, “and of course we want Sweden to be a beacon in this area. “Of course games can be about fantasy,” he added, “but they can be so much more than this. They can also be a form of cultural expression – reflecting society or the society we are hoping for. Games can help us to create more diverse workplaces and can even change the way we think about things.”
